Job description:
Under direct supervision operates various construction equipment and vehicles to construct, repair, and maintain the Town's water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Examples of Duties:
1. Operates the water Jet/Vacuum Machine and other specialized heavy equipment.
2. Performs preventative maintenance on the water Jet/Vacuum Machine as directed by the equipment manufacturer.
3. Operates, repairs, and maintains various light to heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools.
4. Excavates trenches and ditches for the installation of new mains and/or service lines.
5. Operates sewer cleaning equipment, as needed, to clean mains, services, manholes, and spills.
6. Loads and unloads trucks, tankers, and other transport containers.
7. Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools such as washing, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing; checking fluid levels lubrication, point check, tire pressure check, cleaning filters and screens, cleaning of wind shields; inspects to insure road worthiness by checking the operation and presence of all lights, horns, braking systems, wipers, road hazard equipment, securing loads and other items required by the Department of Transportation before allowing equipment onto public roads.
8. Operates, repairs, and maintains various light to heavy equipment and vehicles (such as tractors, mowers, skid steer loaders, front end loaders, backhoes, tracked excavators, sewer cleaning equipment, heavy trenchers, bucket trucks, augers, jackhammers, dump trucks, and other 1 ton to 5 ton vehicles, etc.); and operates and maintains various hand tools.
9. Works safely when working in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic areas, along medians, and right of ways.
10. Trains other employees in operating, repairing, and safety techniques of operating light to heavy construction equipment.
11. Identifies and informs supervisor of potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, public inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
12. Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety rules and regulations
13. Assists other departments as needed.
14. Performs the duties of a Utility Maintenance Worker as needed.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required. One or more years of experience in utility maintenance and equipment operation to include backhoes, excavators and front loaders is required. Must have a valid Texas CDL "A" Driver's License, with proper endorsements and without restriction "L", and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.

Must be skilled in operating heavy to light construction equipment, vehicles, small power tools and equipment in a safe and proper manner. Must be able to exercise good judgment; make competent decisions; handle multiple projects; meet deadlines; and work well under pressure and stress. To perform the essential functions of the job, must be able to talk, read, see, walk, and hear; operate maintenance equipment; follow oral and written directives; perform strenuous physical activities to include, exerting up to 100 lb. of pressure, lifting heavy objects, shoveling, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing on and off equipment, and operating vibrating equipment. Must also have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate equipment; able to lift up to 100 lb. of equipment several times a day; work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, in trenches, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain, and under constantly noisy conditions; in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather and hazardous conditions including street traffic, fume odor, dust/mist, chemical, and toxic waste hazards and other solid waste substances. Must respond within 30 minutes to an on-call or emergency callback.
