Under the general direction of the City Attorney, the Assistant City Attorney prepares and prosecutes criminal and civil cases in Municipal Court and serves as primary liaison with the police department, fire marshal, code enforcement, animal services, clerks, judges and defense attorneys regarding disposition of cases. This attorney is also primarily responsible for providing legal advice to city departments on public information requests and presenting letters and briefs to the Texas Attorney General’s Office to preserve confidential or excepted documents.

Duties include preparing and prosecuting criminal cases in Municipal Court; preparing criminal complaints, evaluating cases, responding to discovery requests and pretrial motion practice, negotiating plea deals where appropriate, preparing witnesses, prosecuting cases in court; responding to and resolving citizen inquiries that have a legal component; preparing legal briefs and arguing criminal cases and/or appeals; providing legal support to City staff when responding to requests for public information, as well as preparing letters and briefs to Texas Attorney General's Office related to Public information requests; providing routine legal advice and guidance to Police Department on matters of criminal or traffic law, criminal procedure, evidence, due process or such other legal matters which may affect the activities of the Police Department.

Job Requirements

Education, training, experience:
Juris Doctorate from accredited law school and membership in the State Bar of Texas. Applicant should possess a minimum of two years of professional legal experience, preferably with experience in municipal law or prosecutorial experience. Must possess knowledge of applicable legal principles, procedures, methods, terminology, and theory to be able to perform the essential job functions listed above. Must also be skilled in all applicable legal research, analysis, negotiations, and writing of legal briefs, opinions, and documents in order to perform the essential job functions listed above. Must be able to pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.
