Job description:
The West Dallas Community Court, an innovative criminal justice project, seeks a Social Service Coordinator. The West Dallas Community Court is a public-private project of the Dallas City Attorney’s Office, which works with the City of Dallas municipal court system to enhance public confidence in justice by improving how courts conduct business. The Community Court’s mission is to respond constructively to “quality of life” crime and work to prevent further crime before it occurs. It accomplishes this goal by sentencing persons charged for Class C misdemeanors to perform community restitution -- cleaning sidewalks, painting over graffiti, sweeping the streets and assisting the elderly in maintaining their property to meet housing standards. The Community Court also offers social services onsite to the defendants.

Social Service Coordinator
The Social Service Coordinator reports to the Social Service Supervisor, and interviews clients, provides public health counseling and makes referrals to the appropriate agencies as assigned by the Community Court Judge. This requires an extensive and thorough knowledge of the services, internal referral procedures and eligibility requirements of public and private health, welfare, educational, recreational, and religious organizations.

Responsibilities:
Social Service Coordinator responsibilities include:
• Assesses the suitability of defendants who are arraigned for various alternative sanctions.
• Conducts intake and assessment for criminal offenders to determine their psychosocial and/or resource need to obtain maximum benefits from all available resources.
• Serves as intermediary between the Community Court and court-based rehabilitation services.
• Develops and implements individual social work treatment plans.
• Works with the individual in the development of a plan and coordinates with referring agencies for implementation of the plan. When appropriate, makes direct contact for the individual with the other agency through conference calling or scheduling appointments.
• Provides short-term case management for problems such as, chemical dependency, homelessness and/or questionable mental state to increase their understanding and acceptance of their circumstances.
• Maintains accurate and complete individual case records to document all action.
• Provides follow-up on all referral contacts, which consist of contacting the organizations to which a referral has been made, and/or contacting the client to find out if the service was provided.
• Attends meetings/seminars to stay current in job practices.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related human service field is required. Knowledge in criminal justice is preferred. Some evenings and weekends will be required. The qualified candidate must undergo a criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Specific experience in working with community organizations.
• Assist clients by interviewing clients and gathering specific information to determine preliminary eligibility for program(s) and make appropriate referral services to ensure that identified socioeconomic needs have been addressed and/of met.
• The ability to make appropriate referrals based on the nature and the degree of problems of the individual.
• Maintain contact with individuals and interact with other referred agencies to ensure proper assistance is received and provide further assistance as needed.
• Skill in use of computer screens and manual dexterity and skill in use of keyboard.
• Personal transportation for attending off-site meetings; ability to transport and handle materials for use at off-site meetings.
• Ability to be creative in developing treatment options; Able to engage clients.
• Able to confront “difficult” clients in a firm yet respectful way.
• Ability to work well under pressure.
• Excellent assessment skills.
• Experience in public speaking; Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
• Skill in obtaining services for clients with other social service & treatment providers.
• Ability to effectively interact with clients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
