Job Summary:
Accurately record residential and commercial water utility consumption; read water meters, install and maintain water meters, and provide customer service.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.
1. Electronically read water meters and downloads recorded data into utility billing system.
2. Complete work orders by testing meters, raising or lowering meter boxes, inspecting meters for leaks, making necessary repairs, replacing damaged meters and boxes, cutting off delinquent accounts, installing new service meters and performing other duties as required.
3. Assist customers by completing water usage data logs and reporting results to Water Records and the customer.
4. Identify and report illegal connections, leaks in mains or meters through routine inspection.
5. Remove dirt and debris from meter boxes to ensure accessibility at all times.
6. Identify and report unsafe conditions, such as damaged or missing meter boxes or lids.
7. Assist Water Records department with various customer service requests.
8. Provide water system maintenance by replacing, repairing and maintaining meters, boxes and vaults.
9. Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Physical and Environmental Conditions: Duties are generally performed citywide in both outdoor and indoor settings. This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with training past high school from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
• Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to provide helpful, friendly and courteous service at all times.
• Ability to quickly learn street and business locations.
• Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
• Hand held recording device, computer and related software, truck, meter lid hook, curb stop key, hand tools, hand pump, vegetation trimming tools, digging bar, pick, shovel, sledge hammer, register cap removal tool, washer remover, 2-way radio, fax machine, cash drawer
• Safety vest, pepper spray, protective footwear, weather gear

Education, Certification and Experience Required
• Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
• Possess a valid Texas Class C driver’s license
• Grade D Water Distribution Systems Operator Certification is preferred
• Related experience is preferred
