Job description:
The City of Bryan is seeking qualified candidates for Safety & Training Officer. This position plans, coordinates and conducts environmental, health and safety training and develops training programs with the managers of Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU).

Responsibilities include:

- Conducts safety meetings for all BTU departments on a critical needs schedule.

- Selects or develops teaching aids, prepares and conducts employee training, and organizes and develops methods to measure effectiveness of training and safety programs.

- Maintains records and compliance documents on hazardous chemicals stored on-site.

- Researches federal, state and local occupational safety and health directives to assure that BTU policies and directives are in compliance.

- Directs and facilitates the apprenticeship programs for the Department of Labor and Texas Veteran's Commission compliance.

- Facilitates training for all BTU personnel in and out of the apprenticeship and training programs.

- Presents safety and general information programs to civic, professional and business organizations.

- Investigates accidents and losses to ascertain causes for use in recommending preventative measures, methods, improved equipment and techniques.

- Participates in quarterly planning meetings to advise managers of new and timely compliance issues.

- Stays abreast of federal state and local laws, ordinances and regulations relating to safety and health.

- Promotes employee interest in, and commitment to, safety.

- Performs related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Occupational/Environmental Health or similar safety related field of study plus 4-6 years of progressively responsible safety related work experience; or an Associate's degree with related coursework plus 6-8 years of safety related work experience.
- Must possess knowledge of OSHA compliance standards.
- Must possess knowledge in the field of safety compliance.
- Must be familiar with federal, state and local environmental, health, and safety laws.
- Must have experience with public speaking and presenting to large and small groups.

Preferred:
- National Safety Council Defensive Driver Course Instructor Certification
- Texas Education Agency Certification to teach driver safety course.
- Certified Safety Professional or similar safety certification.
