Role and Responsibilities: Works under the general direction of the Assistant Library Director to plan, coordinate, and administer adult services, and serves as a member of the Management Team. This is a professional position responsible for all phases of adult services, which includes planning programming, coordinating publicity, providing public relations services, recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers, collection development, training and evaluating Adult Services staff, and providing reference services, as needed. Assists the Library Director in long range planning. Recommends and implements policies, procedures and services to promote public use of the library’s collection and services. Coordinates adult programming and displays for the Library. Maintains records, analyzes and compiles reports on services and programs. Coordinates creation and dissemination of Library publicity tools, including calendars, newsletters, web pages, and cable channel. Provides Library public relations services with citizens, business community, professional, and civic organizations, and maintains collaborative relationships with community groups, such as art organizations and the Friends of the Watauga Library. Coordinates volunteer recruitment and supervision for the Library, including Teen Court. Provides reference and information services, including reader’s advisory, bibliographic and database instruction and searches, and monitoring public access computers. Supervises and evaluates staff assigned to Adult Services. Reviews professional selection literature and media sources to evaluate materials for inclusion in the adult collection. Evaluates existing collection for retention, repair and removal. Evaluates gifts for addition to the collection. Monitors and maintains an assigned budget for the Adult Services unit, prioritizing and determining expenditures within established guidelines. Participates in the budget planning process of the Library by making recommendations for new services, analyzing needs and cost, developing specifications and justifications for budget requests. Writes grants, award nominations, and proposals for Library services. Analyzes space needs and makes recommendations as new formats are introduced in the collection. Participates in staff, City, community, and professional meetings to discuss and act on services, needs, and problems of the Library and the City. Understands and translates the policies of the Library and the City for patrons and staff. Acts as Librarian-in-charge in Director’s and Librarian/Technical Services absence at Director’s discretion.

Job Requirements

Education, training, experience:
Education and Requirements: Master’s degree in Library Science. Specific training in the use of the personal computer environment, automated library systems, use of database resources and the Internet preferred. Two years library experience in reference or other public service area required; supervisory experience preferred. Valid Texas Driver License. Operates computers, automated library system, printers, Internet, reference databases, FAX machine, typewriter, copy machine, telephone and automobile.
