Job description:
City of Hurst (www.hursttx.gov) is accepting applications for the position of PERMIT TECH to provide direct permit issuance and secretarial support to Building Inspections/Neighborhood Services Division and the Rental Inspection and Apartment Inspection Programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Accepts applications for various types of building permits, sign permits, and contractor registrations. Reviews forms for accuracy and completeness, explains permit procedures, forms, fees, and determines if documents are missing. Explains and answers questions for developers, contractors, and homeowners regarding application process for obtaining permits, forms, inspection process, and conditions of C.O. Studies and becomes familiar with City ordinances and regulations. Assists the plan reviewers by maintaining phone contact with contractors and property owners and helps coordinate the needed documents to complete the permitting process. Verifies contractor credentials. Compiles and routes permit folders. Enters required information into computer software case tracking system. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a city-wide basis. Receives permits, payments, bonding, and contractor registrations, handles cash in various transactions, reconciles cash drawer, and prepares daily deposits. Performs general secretarial duties for Building Official and assists Code Enforcement and Planning directors as needed. Handles administrative tasks for Rental Inspection and Apartment Inspection Programs. Prepares packets and is the recording secretary for the Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Code Appeals Advisory Board which requires attendance at approximately three to seven night meetings per year. Types letters, forms, reports, and other materials from copy or rough drafts. Greets the public. Prepares, processes, and maintains various records, reports, and files. Sorts, cross-indexes, and files correspondence and records. Arrives at work on time and works assigned schedule. Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Skills in typing 45 correct WPM and filing (skills test may be given). Knowledge of office practices and procedures, business English, and correct grammar. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, follow through, and meet deadlines. Ability to work and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with the public and City personnel and remain professional when dealing with a variety of personalities, especially under stressful conditions. Excellent telephone etiquette required. Ability to use spreadsheet and word processing software. Ability to quickly learn to use specialized permitting computer program. Ability to sit for extended periods of time to operate standard office equipment, including keyboard, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, printer, laser fiche, and word processing equipment. Ability to file at various heights.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three years related experience in responsible office work required. Associates degree, Spanish language skills, construction related work, and ICC Permit Tech Certification preferred.
