Job description:
Emergency Communications Operator, Trainee: Under immediate supervision, responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for police and fire service, radio dispatching calls for service, and entering accurate and concise data into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. This is the entry-level class in the Emergency Communications Operator series. Incumbents entering this class have limited related work experience. Work is observed and reviewed during performance and upon completion.

Emergency Communications Operator: Under general supervision, responsible for receiving calls for emergencies, police and fire service, radio dispatching police and fire to calls for service, and entering accurate and concise data into the Computer Aided Dispatch computer system. This is the intermediate-level class in the Emergency Communications Operator series, and is distinguished from level I by the ability to perform the majority of the duties assigned with only general supervision and occasional instruction or assistance.

Emergency Communications Operator, Senior: Under direction, responsible for receiving calls for emergencies, police and fire service, radio dispatching police and fire to calls for service, and entering accurate and concise data into the Computer Aided Dispatch computer system. This is the journey-level class in the Emergency Communications Operator series and is distinguished from level II by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as needed.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
Emergency Communications Operator, Trainee: High school graduate or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience. Will also be required to pass a hearing test.

Emergency Communications Operator: High school graduate or equivalent and three (3) years of related experience. Will also be required to pass a hearing test.

Emergency Communications Operator, Senior: High school graduate or equivalent and four (4) years of related experience. Will also be required to pass a hearing test.


Certification(s)/Licenses Required:

Emergency Communications Operator, Trainee:
- Must be able to successfully complete the Basic Telecommunicator Academy
- Must be able to obtain TCIC/NCIC and TDD/TTY certifications within six (6) months of employment
- Must be able to obtain TCLEOSE Basic Telecommunicator Certification within one (1) year of employment

Emergency Communications Operator:
- Intermediate Telecommunicator Certificate
- TLETS/NLETS Operators certificate
- TCIC/NCIC Operators certificate
- Current Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) certificate preferred
- TDD/TTY certificate

Emergency Communications Operator, Senior:
- Advanced Telecommunicator Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education
- TLETS/NLETS Operators certificate
- TCIC/NCIC Operators certificate
- Current Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) certificate preferred
- TDD/TTY certificate
- Communications Training Officer (CTO) certificate preferred*

* Must be issued by a nationally recognized professional standards organization such as the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials – International.

Note: Out of state certifications equivalents will be accepted but must be converted to Texas certification within one (1) year from date of hire.

Work Schedule: To be determined. 24 hour operation. 12 hour shift work will be required.

Special Notes for Applicants : Selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on experience / qualifications.

Special Requirements: Selected candidate will be required to pass a hearing test, pre-employment drug screening test, and a comprehensive criminal history background check.
