GENERAL DEFINITION:
Under direct supervision of the Communications Supervisor, incumbents receive, evaluate and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for service to appropriate personnel; operate Enhanced 911 System for police, medical and fire calls for service; performs related work as required.

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:
• Interact with police officers, judges, attorneys, city employees and citizens.
• Receives requests for information and assistance and direct those requests to the proper source.
• Answer emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire and medical calls for assistance by telephone, Enhanced E911 system or radio and route those calls to the appropriate personnel.
• Gather information from callers including the nature, severity, location and status of emergencies.
• Prioritize calls for service and dispatch those calls for service to available officers by radio.
• Maintain on-going status and awareness of police personnel and police units.
• Provide detailed call information to police personnel as needed.
• Enter, update, maintain and research information through local, state and federal database systems (TCIC/NCIC) for possible wanted persons or stolen property and provides information to the requesting officer.
• Enter data and maintain Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and Records Management Systems (RMS).
• Monitor several police, fire and city radios as required.
• Prepare a variety of reports regarding calls received and response taken.
• Complete routine reports and forms related to arrests, warrants, prisoners, and criminal offenses.
• Accept payments for prisoner releases and issue receipts.
• Monitors, via camera system, prisoners detained in the jail.
• Occasionally have contact with male and female prisoners by preparing meals and performing laundry tasks.
• Performs other related work as required.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• MUST BE ABLE TO WORK VARIOUS SHIFTS / HOURS (24 hours a day / 7 days a week)
• High school diploma or GED equivalency.
• Two years experience working in a modern office environment utilizing typing and customer service, dispatch or equivalent combination.
• Must type 35 words per minute, corrected. Typing test is required.
• Good attendance a must, with no problems or excessive use of vacation, personal or sick leave.

• Communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner, comprehend and make inferences from material in English, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
• Requires Basic Telecommunications Certification through TCLEOSE or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Appointments to positions in the Police Department are subject to meeting appropriate background standards and drug screen.
• Operate/troubleshoot telephone systems, telephone recording systems, radio consoles, camera monitoring systems, computers and related communications equipment.
• Knowledge of personal computers, related hardware and software
• Skill in working under pressure from emergency and stressful situations.
• Skill in obtaining information from hostile or emotional citizens.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The primary duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to listen to voice instructions and to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone and radio; ability to hear sounds within the normal range of hearing (phone conversations, co-workers, supervisors, radio, etc.) and to hear in the presence of noise.
• Sufficient vision, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to review a wide variety of written and electronic materials at arms length or less (distinguish letters and numbers) and to see in detail objects or printed material at greater than arms length including video monitors for long periods of time.
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to type, operate computer equipment, write legibly and to handle a variety of records and files.
• Sufficient personal mobility, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to sit for long periods of time, move between work stations, bending, reaching, kneeling to retrieve records or files and operate general office equipment.
