Job Summary:
Manage the City’s Wastewater Pretreatment Program, and support the Environmental Laboratory staff. This includes: Tracking and interpreting pretreatment regulations, maintaining and monitoring data and compliance records, collecting water and wastewater samples; perform field analysis and pretreatment evaluations; perform laboratory chemical and bacteriological analysis.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
This information is intended to be descriptive of the principle duties and responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.

1. Perform lab analyses: operating lab equipment, Fats-Oil-Greases (FOG) analyzer, preparing reagents, and performing relevant quality assurance and quality control.
2. Perform field work: collecting water and wastewater samples, FOG samples, running field tests, and preparing samples for analysis.
3. Research Federal, State, and surrounding communities’ pretreatment requirements, and contributes to developing the City’s pretreatment program according to State regulations.
4. Work in conjunction with Environmental Health Division to ensure compliance with city FOG Ordinance.
5. Perform administrative and computer-based duties including: maintain sampling records and chain of custody information, enter analysis data and prepare relevant reports, maintain FOG database, prepare pretreatment evaluations for industrial users, and maintain pretreatment-related records and documentation.
6. Perform inspections consulting with business owners and managers regarding pretreatment ordinances, and prepare documentation and testimony for enforcement activities.
7. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Job Requirements

Education, training, experience:
• Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Texas Class C driver’s license.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class C Surface Water, Groundwater, or Water Distribution Certification and a Class C Wastewater Treatment or Collection II certification within 3 years of hire date.
• Three years of experience in water or wastewater laboratory, or related environmental field.
• Experience in performing laboratory chemical analyses.
• Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with training past high school from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
• Knowledge of the fundamentals of chemistry and biology as they apply to treatment and analysis of wastewater, and to pretreatment of industrial wastewater.
• Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
• Ability to use a computer and related software, meters, spectrophotometers, balances, burets, pipets, quant tray sealers, ovens, furnace, incubators, water baths, stills, sampling devices, autoclaves and F.O.G. analyzer.
• Ability to wear a lab coat, eye protection, gloves, steel toe boots, vent hood, acid/base neutralizer, bactericides, hard hat.
