Job description:
The Automotive Technician reports directly to the Chief Mechanic. The Automotive Technician is responsible for numerous complex duties in repairing vehicles and equipment including but not limited to; light to heavy duty trucks, light to heavy miscellaneous equipment (i.e. mowers, trimmers, loaders, backhoes, etc.) as well as shop equipment in the Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Division. Performs diagnostic work and performs skilled work in repairing and maintaining vehicles, equipment and specialized equipment. Automotive Technician also welds and fabricates special tools and equipment for all departments. Automotive Technician will fill in for Chief Mechanic on limited basis while Chief Mechanic is absent.

Tasks Performed Include:

1. Diagnose causes of equipment malfunction.
2. Removes and disassembles units such as transmissions, engines, brakes, hydraulic system, heavy equipment, lawn equipment and differentials.
3. Replaces or repairs worn, broken or malfunctioning parts.
4. Tunes and adjusts parts and settings so that vehicle or equipment operates at the optimum performance level.
5. Service vehicles and equipment as needed.
6. Diagnose and repair heavy equipment (asphalt equipment, loaders, rollers, etc.)
7. Design, weld and fabricate tools and equipment as needed (examples: oil spray trailer, water tanker trailer, gates and special tools).
8. Provides instruction to fellow employees in the care and operation of city vehicles and equipment as needed.
9. Repairs electrical automotive equipment such as installing batteries, terminals, lights, starters, alternators, modules and sensors for computer controlled cars and equipment.
10. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on hydraulic systems.
11. Utilizes proper safety precautions and procedures related to work performed.
12. Prepares vehicles for State Inspections.
13. Repair/replace flat tires.
14. Wash and clean City vehicles.
15. Cleans and maintains shop area.
16. Input and maintain work orders in management software system.
17. Performs other duties and fulfills responsibilities as required by the Director of Public Works.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:
If a tentative offer of employment is made, employment is contingent upon receiving acceptable results from the required pre-employment physical exam, drug test and background investigation.

Training and Experience:

High school diploma or GED.
Minimum two (2) ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certifications required.
Minimum three (3) years previous work experience. One (1) year vocational school would count as one (1) year work experience (from an accredited school).
Must be willing to attend training schools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the modern methods used in repairing, maintaining and adjusting automotive and light truck;
Knowledge of the principles of internal combustion and diesel engines.
Knowledge of heavy construction equipment and hydraulic systems for asphalt equipment, loaders, backhoe, rollers and skid loaders.
Knowledge of modern shop equipment such as scanners and scopes.
Knowledge of automotive air conditioning and repair, also modern methods used in repairing, maintaining and adjusting automotive and mechanical equipment.
Computer skills for office use are required.
Some knowledge in welding and fabrication.
Good customer service skills.

Physical Requirements:

Includes frequent carrying/lifting 10-25 lbs., and 50-100 lbs. occasionally; subject to kneeling, crouching, climbing, walking, twisting, reaching and pushing to perform essential functions.
Heavy work.
