Job description:
Inspects new and existing buildings and structures to enforce compliance to construction, grading, zoning laws, approved plans, specifications, and standards.

$20.02 - $27.20 Hourly
$41,639.00 - $56,571.00 Annually

Job Requirements

Education, training, experience:
High School Diploma or GED

Building Inspector – One year of building or utility experience or five years supervisory experience in the construction field.

Electrical Inspector – One year of electrical inspection experience or three years experience in the electrical construction field.

Plumbing Inspector – One year of plumbing or utility construction experience.

Knowledge of:
• Knowledge of construction trades, ordinances, codes and regulations.
Ability to:
• Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
• Ability to follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures
in performing assigned tasks.
• Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly
• Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race,
ethnicity, religion, or job type.
• Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with builders, contractors, owners,
and the general public.
• Ability to effectively handle sensitive situations requiring courtesy, persuasion,
and tact.
• Ability to handle confidential matters in a responsible manner.
• Ability to read and interpret building plans.
• Ability to walk/move about on uneven surfaces.
• Ability to walk for up to 45 minutes at a time; ability to stand for up to 45 minutes
at a time; ability to sit for up to 60 minutes at a time.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders and to bend, stoop, and kneel as required.
• Ability to work in enclosed spaces as high as only 36 inches.
• Ability to use tape measures, plumber’s level, screwdriver and other measuring
devices/tools required to perform essential functions.

• Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar
word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.
• Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

• Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test, physical exam and
functional capacity test.
• Must possess a valid State of Texas Drivers License Class “C” and good driving
record as defined by City policy.
• Must hold valid Plumbing Inspector license with the Texas Board of Plumbing
Examiner’s or obtain within six months from date of employment.
• Must obtain International Code Council Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner and
Residential Building Inspector within twelve (12) months from date of employment.
• Preference may be given to applicants with three or more years of multiple trade
(building, plumbing, electrical) inspection experience and/or International Code
Council (ICC) certification in the Building, Mechanical, or Plumbing area.
