Job Description

Job description:
CITY OF DENTON • TEXAS
Seeks a
DIRECTOR OF LIBRARIES
(Starting salary range negotiable and competitive from $96K to $144K DOQ with excellent benefits)
Denton (pop. 118,000) is a unique community, blending its historic past with a dynamic and high growth environment, coupled with a diversity to give it economic viability and strength. The historic downtown Courthouse Square is the heart of Denton; the Square and surrounding streets are vibrant and busy both day and night as a gathering place for commerce, civic events and entertainment. Located at the northern tip of a high growth area known as “The Golden Triangle” (formed by Denton, Fort Worth and Dallas), the City is a dynamic community whose rapid growth has affected its infrastructure as well as its culture. Denton is approximately 95 square miles in territory and strategically positioned approximately 37 miles northwest of Dallas and 35 miles northeast of Fort Worth. Denton is a growing community with a long history as the County Seat and the major urban center for Denton County. The City is home to two state universities – the University of North Texas and Texas Women’s University, with a combined enrollment in excess of 50,000 students, and North Central Texas College, the oldest two-year public college in Texas.

The Denton Public Library (DPL) is a department of the City of Denton. Reporting to an Assistant City Manager, the Director of Libraries (Director) is a highly valued and integral part of the City’s management team. The selected candidate will be only the fifth Director in the 75 year history of DPL, which consists of three locations: The Emily Fowler Central Library, the North Branch Library and the South Branch Library. With a collection of over 260,000 items, DPL exceeds the ALA-recommended standard of two items per capita. The Central Library and the two branches checked out over 1.3 million items to patrons in 2012 and had over 583,000 visitors. The Director oversees a staff of 50.5 FTEs and an annual operating budget of $5,424,927. Samples of library programs include “Mini-A-Kon,” an annual anime convention; “Library Larry,” an award-winning television program for school-age children; and the Summer Reading Club, which serves over 6,000 children annually.

Required education includes a Masters degree in Library Science or Information Studies from an ALA-accredited university. Required experience includes 8 to 10 years experience leading a central library system or a large, complex branch in a major system. The ideal candidate will have library management experience in an urban or suburban setting. The City may elect to consider any combination of related education, experience, or certifications that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
Qualified candidates please submit your resume online by visiting our website at www.watersconsulting.com/recruitment. This position is open until filled; however, the first review of applications will take place on February 22, 2013. Following the first review date, applications will be screened against criteria provided in this brochure and the City will consider offering interviews to selected candidates. Interviews in Denton will be offered by the City to those candidates named as Finalists, with reference checks, background checks and academic verifications conducted after receiving candidates’ permission.
